A few days ago, my student said “Tā shì yīgè lǎo shì rén”
but actually, he meant to say “老實” (lǎo shí) which is the second tone, not 4th tone.
Let’s do our pronunciation challenge today and learn what “老實” (lǎo shí) means!
👉他是老實的老師，老是被學生欺負。
(Tā shì lǎoshí de lǎoshī, lǎo shì bèi xué shēng qīfù.)
He is an honest (nice/naive) teacher, [so] he is always mistreated by his students.
☝️« 老式lǎo shì », “shi” with fourth tone, which means “old-fashioned” or “old type” has the same pronunciation as “always” « 老是 lǎo shì »
㊙️‼️« 老實» lǎo shí (“shi” with second tone) is a special word which is not easy to translate, but we use often in mandarin.
It means that someone is honest and always being nice to everyone. This kind of person normally doesn’t know how to cheat or lie. Sometimes, these people don’t know how to protect themselves when someone mistreats them. In general, this word is a positive word. If we say “他是一個老實人” (Tā shì yīgè lǎoshí rén) it means he is a good person, kind and honest.

Ça veut dire quelqu’un qui est très honnête et toujours très gentil avec les gens ; cette personne ne sait pas comment se défendre contre les gens qui la maltraite.
En général , c’est un mot positif. Si on dit “他是一個老實人”(Tā shì yīgè lǎoshí rén), ça veut dire que c’est une bonne personne, gentille et honnête.
